well. always the danger of a blind read but at this point i can at least say this isn't the book for someone looking to avoid graphic description of transphobic hate crimes and CSA

this book is so dense, entirely ran on run-ons, & plays with shifting perspective/grammatical person in a way i adore, but the belated realization that we wouldn't be getting any quotation marks was troubling. as gripping as it is thus far, i cannot in good conscience recommend it to any one of my friends, as it's giving trigger warning wrestlemania. upsetting content battle royale. mexican misogny the novel

i must add that we're coming on my first note here, which is reading the latter and wondering if the step-by-step of some sexual acts are truly necessary. it isn't leaning on porny yet but its inclusion is so gratuitous, so gruesome, that i feel surely it is done so to make us the reader experience some small sliver of her disgust, confusion, and pain. this being said, while i do appreciate the realism of her developed inner logic and fears as someone enduring this without the proper education to understand it, as a reader primarily concerned with whether art about sa is being made for or to make a spectacle of survivors..... i've begun to worry that this one may not pass. to preach to people unexposed to csa about the horrors of it is to simply whack people intimately familiar with the reality over the head with the same old caveman's club. new and shocking to the privileged, same old ugly shit for those with any skin in the game
