Disappointing, but Chodron tips her hand when she mentions compassion and 'less privileged people'. It feels like this book is directed at truly privileged people and not precarious people. All the examples she gives are mundane and superficial. This doesn't seem helpful for processing all of the horrifying shit happening in the world.

Idk, I'm just a lady, not a Buddhist icon, but advice like 'don't feel hatred and aggression towards oppressors cause it brings more negativity into the world' and 'don't cultivate a sense of right and wrong' is not really useful advice 😅

Not sure I'm ready to abandon hope and embrace hopelessness, lol. I get it in theory, but it just feels very fatalistic to me.

Not sure I like the concept of 'spiritual warrior'. Also, it feels like a very individual approach, when my issues (and many other people's) are systemic. So we'll see!

Ruxandra Grrr I other words, it not only feels useless politically, but actually dismissive of political issues and blamey

hawk o, that is disappointing. a copy was left at my home, and I've been thinking about reading it.

i guess at least she references/acknowledges her position even if incidentally - a slight step up from those who don't and implicitly assume their readership share the same privileges/have access to the same resources.

but it does sound very disappointing, and like you say of limited/no use to any one "less privileged". and especially useless if it operates outside of the political, and the societies we're living within - that impact us, and generally impact the more marginalised and oppressed and precarious of us more than anyone else.

Luke Not surprised, the rich patrons of my workplace love this author.

Ruxandra Grrr @hawk, I think there's useful stuff in there as well, but I think I'd already kind of taken what I needed from buddhism years ago and left everything else on the table!

@luke, I'm not at all surprised either, liberals could cultivate benevolence to less fortunate, but they wouldn't have to change much!
