‘A war brews within her. Part of her hopes that a boy this kind won't be tainted by a family so terrible. Another part reminds her there's no scale to measure a person, nothing to prove who they'll become.’

‘It's madness. It's irrational. It's terrifying. But it's time.
Veda settles her head on his chest, his hand running the length of her back. She closes her eyes. There is grace in surrender. Peace in the free fall.
No more excuses, no more running. It's time to stop denying herself happiness.
Veda relents. "You're lucky I love you."
"I know" His smile softens, words earnest, only for her. "I love you, too."’

‘Hiram ignores her words, he has to, or he'll lose the last shreds of composure holding him together.
"I don't ... regret you."’

‘Tears keep falling.
"Mom."
The word knocks the breath out of her.
She pulls him into a hug. "You're the soul of the scorpion,
remember?"’

‘He touches her like she's something precious, reverently breathing her in, basking in the moment.
Then he shifts, cradling her as he rolls onto his back and brings her on top.
"Use me," he says.’

Hiram, who doesn't know how many steps it takes to reach his son. He kneels when he's there, with Antaris placing another bundle of dandelions in his hands.
"Are you thanking the dandelions before picking them?" Veda asks gently.
He looks from her to Hiram, hazel eyes bright as he nods. Shyness gives way to quiet determination. Careful as ever, Antaris steps closer.
A single whispered word changes everything.
"Hi."

‘Hiram inhales his way out of the memory. Seconds later, Antaris does the same. His eyes glisten. When Hiram gathers him into an embrace, Antaris signs a single word, repeatedly.
Mother.
"Did you see her in your memory?"
Antaris nods, smiling even as tears stream down his cheeks. No sadness, only peace.’

‘"Never apologize for who you are." At this, Antaris’s mouth forms a little O of surprise. "Your mom was a Seer, which means you have a litle more of her in you." Hiram stops as Antaris looks at him once, his eyes searching. Resting a hand on the boy's damp curls, he adds quietly,
"I'm not ashamed. I'm proud to be your dad."
Antaris surges up to hug him.‘

‘"You're too young to know the weight of grief, but youve been carrying it in your heart. It's too heavy. Too much.” Khadijah cups his cheek, her own eyes flashing briefly. "It's okay to let it go. Just for now."
When the dam cracks, it sounds like a cough. Then it crashes. Grief rushes in as tears flow out. No one is ready for the onslaught.’
