It’s been about 20 years since the last time I read this book.
I was in the eighth grade & I remember this book leaving me SHOOK.
The kids in this book were older than me at the time.
Today, I am wayyy older than the kids in this book. Knowing how the book ends & seeing the signs off obvious depression and understanding the effects of death more personally now that I did at the age of 12/13? This book is heavy.

Oof.
Funny timing: the chapter I just read has Andy’s dad stressing the importance of Black people assimilating into white society. Meanwhile another book I’m reading talks about a Mexican author assimilating, attaining it, then rejecting it.
I’ve seen & lived both sides of the coin.
You can’t win.
Live for yourself & Jesus. Life is too short to be playing the white mans game just to be seen as human.
