We pull up to the driveway and I stare at the house, dread filling my stomach. Landon looks over, “Aww, come on, kid. If you’re going out with me she’s not gonna say a word about your singleness,” I shove him, “I’m not worried!” I insist. “Yes. You’re just looking like that because you’re afraid that the house will eat you whole.” He says flatly, “Com’n Claire. It’s not like I can’t tell that she gets on your nerves. I know you think that you’re good at hiding your emotions but you suck.” I frown, “That was kind of rude-” He interrupts me, “Nope. Shut up. Landon is talking now,” I stifle a smile. “I mean, I love Mom but she’s been pestering you about boys since you were–what thirteen? Yet, anytime you get close to one she goes completely insane.”
That was completely, utterly true.
Mom will beg me for information about my love life and as soon as I tell her she goes berserk. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve brought up a problem I had with a guy friend and she goes off about how I’m too young to have a boyfriend.
I’ve just given up now.
It’s not worth the work.
