Esther is tasked by Shekure to visit Elegant’s widow to discuss missing halva and what she knows of the double murder. Kalbiye produces a piece of paper with a drawing of a horse, something Elegant wouldn’t have been known for.

After the wedding, the sudden family retires to bed. After falling asleep telling the children a story, Shekure is awoken by what turns out to be Hasan talking to Black outside. Hasan resigns to calling on the judge in the morning, accusing the couple of adultery. While Shekure is outside, the children discover Enishte’s body. A horse painting contends the Frankish methods are not blasphemy.

Black and Shekure meet up to discuss hiring false witnesses to attest to her husband’s death so they can be married. Black secures the divorce, claiming to represent Enishte as Shekure’s guardian and makes the preparations for the wedding. The bridal procession commences and then the two are married.

Shekure returns home to discover her father’s body and the upturned home. She quickly cleans and moves the body to avoid the children discovering and once they arrive home enlists the help of Hayriye to further clean and attend to the body. The color red describes its omnipresence and how it was created in the form of paint.

The murderer sneaks into Enishte’s home; Enishte discovers him and they have a conversation about the blasphemous commission and the opinions of Elegant and his death. Enishte resorts to flattery in an attempt to save his own life, but is ultimately killed and describes his slow death and transition to the afterlife in remarkable detail.

Shekure receives the letters from Esther and is tormented by love for Black, and a different kind of “love” for Hasan, resigning that her husband will never return. She has Orhan deliver a letter to Black agreeing to meet him at the abandoned house. They later meet up and become romantic. They discuss marriage and the potential issues that may arise.
