2. Dr Faust
Pre war French come on to the scene- interestingly Debussy is piping up that he wants to compose as Turner paints (easy breezy and full of light) but I think his work still requires a lot of concentration to enjoy (not very easy breezy). Same with Satie - I probs just listen to the bits I like and didn't realise there were constipated piano pieces as well.
Imo being a snob got in the way of their vision

Chapter 1 - fin de siecle (1900-1930s)
Mahler and Strauss were frenemies, Mahler a bit serious who listened to Freud and Nietzsche too much and Strauss the fanboy turned maestro.
Personally not a massive fan of either of their work, there's a bit too much going on. Less drama and more space to listen pls. Guess it's the musical equivalent of a gothic renaissance painting or a really tannic red
