I just went ahead and finished Peak. I am not quite sure if we were supposed to read all the way until the end so I will make this update as if I stopped a few chapters short. I left off last time when Peak was meeting the different personality traits of the people he would be climbing everest with. He did not like many people at first and just was focused on training for the climb but he soon befriends a guide named Zopa and his son Sun-Jo. They are making it up to the first basecamp when something goes wrong with one of the climbers. He is not accustomed to the altitude and immediately has to be escorted back down the mountain. Peak is worried that he will not make it to the top but continues observing his fellow climbers as if to study their weaknesses so that he can survive the longest. Along the way, Peak and his father encounter a couple storms and other setbacks such as injuries or geographical obstacles. This whole book is intense because they are always in a constant battle with the elements of the mountain striving to overcome them and get to the top. Peak learns later on that he is actually the second youngest person on the trip next to Zopa's son, Sun-Jo by only several days. They become even better friends once they realize this and this becomes the final hardship. As Peak and the few others left are nearing the top, their is somewhat of a rivalry associated with being on top. Peak struggles with his pride and makes a monumental decision that I will discuss on the next post :) Until next time Mrs. Simmons!
