Opal just found Winn Dixie at the grocery store, Winn Dixie was causing ruckus but Opal took the blame for it so she could take Winn Dixie home. Winn dixie is now allowed in the church after a howling event and Opal is going around town trying to find friends by showing off her dog and telling stories to the librarian etc..

Miss Franny Block tells the two girls the story about her great grandfather and the Civil War and how he created some candy. Opal gives this candy to all of her friends and they all taste the same thing in it, Opal learns that her friend recently had a brother die and she starts to read the book "Gone with the wind" to Gloria Dump.
