I figured out who’s behind everything yesterday which is why I keep forgetting this is a mystery. I’m just in it for the ride. And it’s a great character piece. Why would a guy like Buddy Lee know a word like copacetic?! Put the thesaurus down Cosby. The co-villains are a just redneck bozos that get their asses handed to them by one man. They are very stupid, which was also a problem in My Darkest Prayer.

Done. Good ending, but I definitely can’t get down with how absurd everything turned out to be. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.

The mystery is way too easy to figure out and it was also clumsily revealed. Also, the characters made some extremely bad decisions to the point where I can’t suspend my belief. Like, you mean to tell me she took the bait like that??? This could be a case where readers know more than the characters, but I’m going to be ungenerous and say that Cosby is forcing the writing. Lots of editing mistakes too.

The writing’s so good! Cosby uses these crazy similes….probably a nod to Chandler. I remember in My Darkest Prayer he said someone’s hands were so ashy he looked like he just got through eating powdered donuts!!! Oh, Easy Rawlins is straight up mentioned, too. Huge Mosley fan is Cosby. More Ike and Buddy interaction please! I’m almost forgetting this is a mystery….

Ten chapters in and my impression is that this book will make a good movie. A Road to Perdition thingie. And it’s in third person. Yay! Ike and Buddy - sounds like a comedy duo - are teaming up and trying to figure things out. I like Buddy a bit more than Ike. I find Ike too similar to the MC in My Darkest Prayer.
