The battle has begun, and Meade couldn’t have asked for two better commanders to open it. Both Buford and Reynolds have carefully planned out the opening. With both understanding the necessity of holding the high ground south of town. Heth or the other hand has completely blundered into a battle that was not sanctioned by Lee. With Reynolds dead it’s now up to Howard to lead the army on the field.

With Hooker’s last acts as commander of the Army of the Potomac he sealed his fate as its leader. But he also gave it the opportunity to gain an advantage on Lee. Stuart being missed now puts the Confederates in a position where they are losing the tactical advantage.

Lee’s Virginia centric view on the war can be seen as a direct factor to Gettysburg and events beyond.
