I am not sure, looking for words to describe the impressions novels leave me with, I am sometimes inclined to try to compare them with paintings, but not the other way round :). I thought it interesting how further on in the novel a character quotes Flaubert, while on this particular point, I'd think Flaubert would maybe point at his belief that it was impossible to explain one art form in terms of another (which doesn't mean he didn't try to, maybe he did, as he thought it impossible?)

I generally find Anita Brookner novels are like paintings. Or sometimes a novel seems to me to be particularly visual. Tbough I would not wantnovels to be like paintings , just sometimes they appear that way to me
