Fascinated to learn that the Dalai Lama and its prestige owe mostly to the Mongol conversion to Tibetan Buddhism after their loss of China.
The term ‘Dalai’ is Mongolian in origin (meaning ‘all-encompassing’) — and the power and prestige held by that office were installed by Mongol forces amidst heated rivalry between various Buddhist sects. The 4th Dalai Lama (really the 2nd) was even a Mongol prince!

Brendan Tibetan religious influence over the Mongols, in turn, radically transformed Mongolian culture, gradually causing Mongols to grow pacified and sedentary by absorbing a sizable portion of Mongolian men into monasteries and exercising religious authority to rival the khanate.

Ming China unsuccessfully tried to break up the cultural ties and alliances between Tibetans and Mongols, but they didn’t succeed — until modern times. Ironically, the much-feared alliance between these groups probably saved China a lot of trouble thanks to their self-pacification!

Brendan I’m also struck by how closely the Chinese absorption and settlement of their southern and southwestern regions mirrors the settlement of the American West, only over a much longer timeframe. In both places, similar processes of conquest, locally governed “reservations,” settlement, reneged agreements, expulsions of natives to marginal zones, and gradual cultural assimilation…
