As wonderful as the story is, the appendices are perhaps the most extraordinary aspect of Tolkien’s work, a glimpse into the world-making depth on which The Lord of the Rings was built.

The appendices as the great Western expanse. Many didn’t make it (I am one of the many).

Where else are we to learn the lines of the kings (& stewards, thains, etc), the linguistic history of Middle-Earth and much more besides???
