America, Seen Through Photographs, Darkly

in this text Sontag drives you through a kind of history of american (and therefore occidental) aesthetics through the lens of photographic experience. going with the old Whitman who works after a generalization of beauty in order to go beyond beauty and ugliness, but whose revolutionary project is undoable, and therefore it will fall into the surrealist. From here Sontag

In Plato’s Cave

mauro di carlo talks about Stieglitz, and the attempt to make “literate” beautiful photographs, thus creating a canon that Whitman didn’t believe in. After generalization, and abolition, comes parody and Diane Arbus. Get the ugly, bring the freaks, do transgression! Since photography is the only art that depicts reality as it is, she will show what (white upper-class) people don’t want to see, changing morals, saying fuck to ideals, being subversive, as others like Weegee or Warhol (even thought he was mocking). She was very right here
