I just looked up how old she was when she wrote this novel and when she died. I realized that in 6 days it will be the anniversary of her death, and that in a month I will have the exact age as she did when she died. To think that at my age she already had an ex-husband, 2 children, 2 suicide attempts, 2 published books (one of which was The Bell Jar), and I'm just chillin' over here like a 30 y. o. teenager.

"Why did I attract these weird old women? There was the famous poet, and Philomena Guinea, and Jay Cee, and the Christian Scientist lady and lord knows who, and they all wanted to adopt me in some way, and, for the price of their care and influence, have me resemble them."
Yo I've been relating to Esther way more than I would like to.

Damn, I regret so much not reading this book when I intended to, that is when I was 19. I would have identified with Esther so much. At that age, we shared so many of the same thoughts, experiences and feelings it's uncanny. Then again, I have the pleasure to read it at the same age she had when she published this novel, and look at it with the same set of fully-grown (albeit myopic) and nostalgic eyes.

I finally started the book I have wanted to read for more than 10 years now! And my first impression is how surprisingly contemporary it is. The world really hasn't changed that much in the meantime.
My second impression is how beautiful her prose is. If I didn't already know and love her poems, I could definitely tell she was a poet. The metaphors she uses are on another level.
