I don’t love that it took until 46% into the book for our point of view character to be thrown into the fray and be seen as worthy of discussion and respect by the gentry families. Like I get they treat poor relations as toys and the Crawford like feeling more progressive than The Betram and Fanny but it is wild to see what a rise in importance Fanny gets when her Cousins are away on their honeymoon / girls trip

This play selection scene is really uneven. I think it would help if we got more scenes of Thomas Jr beforehand so we could see how his instinct to talk over everyone was driving his sisters up the wall when Mariah and Julia thought they had the showier roles

I’ve just learned from Prof Google there’s a 2007 adaptation with Billie Piper and Hayley Atwell. I haven’t made plan to watch it but I will be subjecting my Letterboxd moots to this same experience because Hayley Atwell as Mary Crawford is a galaxy brain casting decision regardless of the overall quality of the piece…she will lie through her teeth & insult you with a grin on her face I can tell you that much

Borrowing a mare two days in a row is low stakes issue to be mad about when you’ve spent your entire life being treated as the literal poor relation in the household but “Selfishness must always be forgiven”…Mary Crawford you are not safe from my poisonous pen, fix your heart before you talk to Fanny like that again

I’ll tell you this much, if I suggested a day trip because I wanted to see a beautiful historic estate and grounds before it was renovated and then the entire group I discussed it with decided they were going to plan the day trip themselves and make me sit at home with my Xanned Aunt, T R U S T I would be making it other peoples problem

Lady Betram being zooted through several sections of this book is wild. First it’s just like she’s putting on airs and now that Fannie is 15 it’s like “Lady Betram has chronic pain/extended illness/ seasonal depression, so for this section she’s going to be starting shit with her sister and then be completely unbothered about the drama she is initiating because she’s so absent”.

For my notes, three sisters. One marries a Baron, One marries a Vicar who serves under the Baron and then Fannies mother marries a lieutant something who becomes an alcoholic after a workman’s comp issue and they have 9 kids. Also the sisters got into a tiff yrs ago
