Incredibly embarrassed to admit that I thought this was a memoir for 2/3 of the book and I only just now realized it is a novel, even if one based on a true story. This makes it much more readable because I can assume Kerouac was being humorously hedonistic with his characters. If he took himself seriously writing this, though, I am back to hating him.
