The details of this book did stick with me, but I didn't particularly like it. Eager to hear what you think

So I’m coming fresh off of this book. I just put it down 15 minutes ago. We definitely have different opinions on this one. I’ll definitely admit the beginning was a slog, but not in a way that was boring… more so that it took me about 200 pages to understand what the plot was going to be. With that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed Anna Fox’s narration and personality. Reading about a person who supposedly has this incredible background in psychology and psychiatry suffer so greatly with mental illness, ignore common advice such as don’t drink with medication and take your pills as advised, don’t ignore your counselors etc. really humanized the profession in my opinion and made Anna an incredible character because shouldn’t she *be expected unfairly* to have the capability to solve her own problem? I did not immediately catch on to the idea that Livvi and Ed were dead which made the reveal heart wrenching. However, when the car plummeted over the gorge, some of the authors descriptions made the coming twist very obvious. Also did not love the affair plot line. Felt as if it didn’t serve much a purpose in and of itself outside of its necessity as a catalyst for the split and following events. I guess what I’m trying to say is it could have been anything. The angle chosen felt underutilized. I did go back and forth wondering whether or not this was all in Anna’s head. The book being a domestic thriller would suggest to me that Anna wasn’t simply hallucinating, but I believe the author included enough plausible deniability that if you ignore the mechanics of a thriller, you could be led to believe Anna has made it all up. I did not enjoy the movie references. Felt them to be boring and misplaced. Definitely had a small inkling off and on that Ethan wasn’t who he seemed to be but the sheer horror of the reveal was incredible. I wake up often and murmur to my kitty cat. I cannot imagine the darkness answering me back. Seriously love how cold and calculating Ethan was written. I’d believe the author did their research on psychopathy before writing his character. Didn’t love that Anna tried to distract him through psychoanalysis. Did love that her final play against him though was her own personal acceptance. They’re dead and gone. But their memory lives on and Anna finds peace in the fact that Ed and Liv died loving her. I found that to be done very well. Did feel the ending related to Anna’s healing was rushed. Would have liked to give it a 4.5 but will round up because I found the positives very positive
