On the 40th anniversary of the Challenger disaster, I was sitting in the bitter cold waiting for the all-clear to re-enter my building after a burst pipe evacuation, talking on the phone with my parents, when my dad told the story of how the radio station he worked at in 1986 wouldn’t let them cut into the broadcast for the news fifteen minutes early.

Anyway this book is great so far.

This book is so well-written and it kind of reads like a horror movie.

To me, a mark of great success in narrative nonfiction is when readers feel captivated by the story and desperate to know more, even when it’s not in their usual arena. I’m not much of a space girlie, but I’m riveted.

I’m also loving the focus on telling the human stories. Especially for those lost in the disaster, it’s beautiful to learn so much more about them than the trivia fact of their deaths.
