This book starts to tie in with our textbook reading which makes it easier to understand. The novel is starting to pick up the pace as John Brown starts to show the radical side of himself and his passion for abolition. Brown developed radical schemes such as the Subterranean Pass Way for slave liberation. Brown was also a violent radical. Provocations, such as The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, led Brown to violence.

This book has already started off to a pretty actioned packed beginning, even though the first few chapters have to contain context to help give the reader all of the background. The author notes something very important in the next chapter which was Nat Turner's Reblellion and slave codes. The rest of this portion covers John Brown's back story of where he came from, and why he was such a kind heart towards the slaves
