it also does that thing where the book tells you our heroine is smart and she constantly does dumb things that men (at one point an 8 year old!) must save her from

Yes BUT sometimes uncovering the batshit crazy stuff in a dusty old mass market paperback that no one else has thought of in decades is anthropologically interesting enough to be worth all the ick! Maybe??
