The novel is compelling and the story impressive. However, the book asks the reader to admire Hannah as observant, trained, and fastidious, then repeatedly suspends that competence whenever it would interfere with the plot. She is easily manipulated in moments that require her vulnerability, only for her intelligence and control to be restored when the narrative wants to emphasize her insight or importance.
