This book had a difficult opening for me - it begins with a loss that echoes my own - loss of my mother. The story is a slow build centered on tea, poison, and a light mystery. The Chinese was a barrier at first, but the world became easier to follow. The characters and food descriptions, added warmth and grounding to the story’s tension. In the end, it’s a gentle, atmospheric fantasy that rewards patience.
