thoroughly charmed - amazing how eliot can imbue so much meaning and tension into the most ordinary of events. how was i on the edge of my seat during the vote for the hospital's new chaplain?! i adore dorothea, lydgate, fred, rosy, ladislaw... how alive they all feel!

book 3 has been my favorite so far. dying of laughter during the library scene. and WOW that final chapter. what a wild ride this has been - can this book never end?

this book genuinely expands my empathy in real time lmfao. i'm figuratively peeking through my fingers in secondhand embarrassment during the fred vincy chapters. but he reminds me of a friend i adore who is similarly careless and self-absorbed (despite the very best of intentions) and the love with which eliot writes about fred makes me want to be more forgiving and gentle myself. soooooo good

george eliot has so much affection and empathy for all of her characters, no matter how foolish they can be. it's stunning to see how she does this and with such humor too!

i'm pleasantly surprised by how much this has already made me laugh out loud. this year's plan is to start and end my day reading longer books this year to really immerse in them, and so far so good !
