Really good to have this as a companion for me as I try out new restaurants in the city where my new job is. It's all been A Bit Disappointing alas, ethnic foods that have been watered down by being in a majority white city so you can't even trust them when they say "WARNING: SPICY." Still, the book's been very good. I can see why it was so popular and praised when it came out.

lmao must be traveling for work the way i just more than doubled my completion in a day.
Some of the writing is a little too "using fuck as a sentence enhancer" now that I'm further in, but the characters are decently likeable still, even if some of the background stuff (Steve's youthful criminal history) feels pretty pat. But then he befriends a lioness.

I think the character writing is interesting. Like it'd probably hate Erwin but I've definitely known people like him so it's easy to slot him in and kind of enjoy being in his mind. I think it stand well in contrast to Stephen in particular, and also Carolyn, who is necessarily a little more unknowable but in a way that's compelling as well.

Lady at a diner saw me reading this and asked what it was about and I was like "you know what. I'm still trying to figure that out." Which wasn't quite true but the oddness of the story can make it difficult to describe to others. Even just the concept of the library is like, well, it's not JUST a library, it exists out of time, stuff like that you gotta backfill as you explain.
