I changed my mind. I like that she is out of her depth. She needs to be forged in a fire, nothing truly terrible has happened to her until now. I can't wait for the next book.

I love the relationship triangle trope for these characters.

What are you willing to sacrifice?

There are so many themes in this book: Romeo and Juliet, immigrants, parental relationships, dreams and hard work, life choices, intelligence, societal expectations, money, what is beauty and perfection, gender roles, drugs, human flaws, power, growing up, I could go on and on. This book is so good.

I must have missed isla being a polemist. I thought she was a bioalchemist after aris sex education

This book is also a little like inception or ronans dreaming.

And Sam wonders if this is how it happens to all of them, that once upon a time, he had seen beauty in the world too, had trusted and smiled and been a child. He had kept his heart open until he couldn't bear the wounds any longer, and then he had shut it, letting himself go still and cold.

Damn this book is hitting all of life's questions: what if she had just stayed? What if that had been the dream? But that's the problem, isn't it - you can't know what the future would have been all you can do is make your best guess.
