I think that the theme of this book is regret. Charlie regrets taking his brother out because he feels he was the one that killed him. Even after the brother dies, Charlie doesn't even go back to sailing. He feels that it is not worthy unless he is doing it with his brother. After he meets a girl, is when he feels the regret of stopping his talent. Once he starts again, he realizes that this was good for him.
