Perhaps I'm, ahem, a little late reading this. But the first chapter really sorta sucks you in. A quasi-YA, dystopian, post-apocalyptic story with hints of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery"? Yeah. I can dig it. And I really liked the little end-of-the-first-chapter twist.
