Wayne Westerberg and various other people from Carthage, South Dakota, reminisce about Chris's final visit with them. Chris did odd jobs that no one else could handle while he prepared for his Alaskan adventure. He was described by Wayne as a hard-worker who did his job. Chris was a hard worker, and didn't mind working where ever he stayed, many people enjoys his company, but thought he lacked common sense.

Chris became very weak during his journey, and reported in his journal of his health. When it was time to go back the river Chris essential crossed in the winter thawed out, and was too strong to get across. He became very ill, and couldn't go out a catch food, or keep himself warm which lead to his death. Chris was a very smart, unique individual, but he lacked the necessary things for Alaska's vast plains.

In April of 1992, Chris McCandless hitchhiked from Carthage, South Dakota, to Fairbanks, Alaska, riding with Gaylord Stuckey, a driver who was transporting a motor home to a Fairbanks . Stuckey dropped Chris off at the University of Alaska, where the young man spent a few days researching edible plants before he began his hike west into the wild. Chris was not prepared for this type of journey.

In April of 1992 a young man named Christopher Johnson Mccandless decided to leave without a trace. Chris was a very bright young man, and excelled high in academics. His parents walt and Billie raised Chris in Virginia along with Chris's younger sister Carine. Chris pleased his parents by attending college, but after college Chris gave $25,000 to charity, abandoned his car , and most of his possession.
