Makes the argument the sea of glass is drawn from primeval mythological sources, some of which can be seen in Genesis. In Genesis the word Tehom (deep) is a variant of Tiamat, who was slain by Marduk in babylonian mythology. In other words, Peter Enns was right, though late in the game.

My Greek prof in college studied under Caird at Oxford and sort of indirectly transmitted his teachings to me. Caird is valuable because he represents the best of English scholarship while still believing in the basics of Christianity. Interestingly, Caird also trained N. T. Wright, so this commentary on Revelation may give one a glimpse into Wright's own thoughts on eschatology.
