"Only if this were a film would I consider it real." Indeed. I love Herzog, the holy nutter... I saw a documentary where, after daring a guy that, if he got his film made, Herzog swore he would eat his shoe. The film was made and the leather boot was stewed for hours with vegetables. Herzog took a mouthful of it.
And 'The Burden of Dreams', the making of Fitzcarraldo - mind blowing, especially the part where he has a bunch of people drag a ship over a hill. The subject/object of the movie had the boat cut in half, but Herzog? Oh, no, he had people risk and lose their lives in the process of hauling a whole boat over.
So I'm looking forward to this review, our Kimley.
Yes! Yes! I'm pretty enamored with Herzog myself. The premise of this book is so insane and yet so magnificent. Pretty much like most of what he does.I just started it last night before bed while slightly sleepy so I haven't gotten far and the language is very stream of consciousness type stuff which makes it especially good to read right before bed.
I recently heard him say on one of his DVD commentaries that he felt this book was the best thing he'd ever done - better than any of his films!
I will report back shortly - the book is only 68 pages.
At the price I've just seen it retails for, there's no way I'm going to read this book while I chomp on my credit crunch sandwiches, so you'd better report back now you've whetted my appetite. And, in the spirit of 'The Burden of Dreams', how about upping the ante on the original, Kimley? !Adelante!
Yes, I know, I know. This book is very pricey for such a small paperback. I've been wanting to read it for quite some time and am only in possession finally because I got it as a lovely b-day gift. The book itself is put out by an indie press and they did a very nice job of it. It's a beautiful little jewel. I almost hate to crack the spine. What's a girl to do?
