How is this book? It sounds sad but good

I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. The main character was pretty unlikeable. You want to root for her but you really can't. There were also a lot of eye roll moments for me. We get it; you suffered. It's a huge bummer, there's no real mystery to some and there's no real takeaway. I read God of the Woods first and found it much more layered and interesting.

It is such a bummer when it's a good story but you just hate the main character.

Yeah God of the Woods felt very purposeful. This felt less so. For the most part, I could imagine it as a gritty detective show on HBO, akin to Mare of Easttown, but this character learns nothing and doesn't grow. She's very frustrating. I'd still read more of this author's stuff, though.
