Isn't it the most common type of emptiness, not having understood what moves ourselves in life? I think it was obvious that although Siddhartha has decided to devote himself to his senses and pleasure, it isn't true satisfaction what he finds after all, it was necessary to leave everything behind to start learning what our inner voice demands truly from us.

I like how after living for three years with the ascetics, he realized that it's the same philosophy that gamblers and prostitutes live alike. Always looking to focus their mind away from the sensorial word and just barely capable of doing so for brief moments at the time.
