I found it interesting that the author ends the story with Uncle Frank’s suicide because it solves the family’s immediate problems but leaves a strong, lasting impact. This ending shows David’s loss of innocence throughout the book and realizing that the world is morally complex.

I was really struck by the moment Gail tries to load the shotgun. I find it interesting how David's dad is a different sheriff than what a typical sheriff would look like, such as no big gun.
