Peter Berkow I am inspired by this book. I am now reading it a second time in two weeks. Relevant: I realize that Howard Gardner's theory of "Multiple Intelligences" has gone through a cycle of popularity, and then skepticism. But, I've noticed anecdotally, as a teacher, that many of his teories are valid in practice. Students learn in different ways. Simple concept.

I mention this, because I teach students who are 16 to 80 years old at a community college. Though Gardiner was focused on children, I've noticed that my students are essentially grown up kindergartners. Some learn by seeing. Some learn by listening. Some learn from other students.

In a similar way:

I'm getting a strong feeling that many of the best practices for inspiring young children to appreciate literature could be adapted for the community college classroom.

I might start with CHOICE ! Too often, teachers try to cram literature they love down the throats of resistant college students, without giving them any agency or choice of content they might want to read and respond to.
