Once Griffin got out into the public eye I think he started to believing in his experiment more. The first encounter he had with another "negro" was in the lobby of the hotel on Rampart Street & the man didn't question whether he was white or black. That gave him hope, but then Griffin ran into his first bad white encounter when he was on the bus & a woman asked why he was staring when he almost gave up his seat.
