I finished the second story, Sebastopol in May. Lots of untranslated French in this edition. But also the end of that section is so powerful. It kind of echoes 'The Christmas Truce' of World War One.

Ah, Penguin Classics in 1988 when no one bothered to translate the French even in the endnotes or footnotes. I'm assuming the French was in French in Tolstoy's original text. I know he does it in War & Peace. I know the posh Russians spoke French not Russian. My schoolboy French only got me so far.
