The plot line transitions from present to flashback and back. This happens because almost everything Tayo experiences in his day to day life reminds him of the war he fought. The current drought reminds him of the rain in the jungle. The Japanese remind him of enemies. But what I found interesting was how the little Japanese boy reminded him of his cousin, Rocky. Metaphor and imagery adds to the emotion in this book.

Diana’s Previous Updates

Diana
Diana is finished
In the final section of the book, it seems as if all of the loose ends are tied together, including the completion of the ceremony, family ties, understanding of Tayo's previous disorientation, and even the role/characters of T'seh and her husband. T'seh's whereabouts after Tayo is completely cured is unknown and I'm curious to know if Silko purposely included her just to fulfill her role then completely disappear.

This section of the book continues to show the Native American perspective of nature compared to that of the white men. This is seen through Tayo's encounter with the mountain lion. Tayo observed its movement and beauty with awe. This was the opposite of the white men wanting to hunt down the lion to bring in as soon as they saw the fresh tracks. They have no regard for nature or the animal's beauty as Tayo does.

I assumed that the beginning of the novel would've talked about Native American culture, but it isn't until now that Tayo comes across someone who tries to explain the traditional perspectives of the Native Americans. What i liked the most was how Betonie explains that the changing of the ceremonies doesn't effect the significance of them. I wondered if this was a parallel to the book's "change" of mixed cultures.

These last few sections include flashbacks of Tayo's family, but also include multiple characters' views on the mix of culture. For most of Tayo's life, he has been badly treated, especially by his aunt, due to his mother's promiscuity with the wrong (white) man. I now wonder why Tayo's reputation/treatment plays a part in his cluttered and instable thoughts, and how that may be a cause of his severity of his PTSD.
