“You love this girl, Alex?”
“I care about her. I want to spend my life with her.”
“Do you love her?”
“As much as I can love.”
He shook his head. “I think you’re capable of loving.” “I’m capable of caring. Looking after. Protecting. Providing.”
“And that’s enough for her?”
“She says she loves me,” I admitted quietly.
“How did that feel?”
“Like a gift I don’t deserve.”

I was shocked to see the kitten on Alex’s shoulder. He met my confused look with a small smile.
“I tried, Magnolia,” he said with a shrug.
“…But I felt him trembling like the way he did when he found us last night. And the shelter was full of cats and kittens. He was going to be there a long time. I knew it. So I couldn’t leave him.”

The creature moved faster and, before I could object, launched itself at me, climbing up to my chest, and burrowing into the fabric. Its claws dug into my skin.
“What do we do now?”
“We take the kitten home,”
“No. We are not keeping this thing.”
She looked at me, surprised. “No, we’re not.”
I felt relief that she understood. “Great.”
“You are. The kitten picked you.”

“Because you, Maggie darling, take my good with my bad, and you equal them out.”

She leaned closer, lowering her voice and shooting me a wink. “I’m winning.”

My gaze met Maggie again. She was smiling at me. She was so pleased for me that it made me smile.
“And one last thank-you, if you’ll permit me. Although you weren’t with me at the time, a special mention to my assistant, Magnolia Myers. You have done exactly what you promised to do at your interview. My office has never run so seamlessly. I would, indeed, be lost without you. Your work is above excellent.”

“…And I want more coffee when you’re done.”
She stared at me, lifting her eyebrows in question. Then she mouthed a word at me. I tightened my hand on the doorframe.
“Please,” I said through clenched teeth.
“Of course, sir. Anything you need.”
I glared at her then swung around and headed back to my desk.
I left the door open.

When i say he’s cooked i mean he sniffed his hand after holding her scarf type of cooked. But he onnnly did it once ☝🏼 guys so he’s “([{handling it}])” don’t worry about him 🤥
