Ch. 2 on eating locally has numerous alarming stats about our reliance on fossil fuel to make modern farming work, with some carrots thrown in about how it may be possible to generate enough food for the planet using old, small-scales methods with small farms.

So sad to read about, as one example, the green energy changes that were taking place around 2005 or so and realize many of those programs are currently being dismantled in favor of the petrochemical giants and coal companies.

More sobering statistics. Some pretty familiar, at least the gist, such as Walmart causing local stores to close and small town centers to be abandoned, with an overall loss of jobs while the new jobs provide poorer pay and benefits (they're selling stuff cheaper, after all, so...duh?). Communities make us feel better, at least statistically speaking.
