Apparently an anti-thesis of 'The Master and Margarita', of course there is no devil but there is time travel. If Bulgakov demonstrated the shortcomings and evils of a Socialist system, Voinovich demonstrates the incoherency of such a system if ever fully realised. Bulgakov's Moscow had housing problems and sung praises to Stalin, Voinovich's Moscow is renamed to Moscowrep - an archetype of ideal Communism.
