Hooks draws a comparison between violence toward women and violence toward children, showing how even the most level-headed people often fail to keep the same standards. Many will rightfully call it abuse when a man hits a woman, yet excuse the very same act as “discipline” or “education” when a parent does it to a child.

Sarucci - Teaching children that love and violence can coexist not only confuses their understanding of care, but also places confusing expectations on them. We expect them to refrain from physical aggression with their peers, and later in life with their partners, even though they were raised to see violence as part of love. For boys, this risks normalizing the use of force as an expression of authority or affection; for girls, it can foster the belief that mistreatment can simply be part of being loved
