Since it seems as likely as not that in a week DONALD FUCKING TRUMP is going to be declared commander-in-chief of the most powerful army humanity has ever known, I ask the good people of the world, what are you stocking your bomb shelters with? Also, half of America? Fuck you. I'm not one of you and I don't like you - stay away from me and my family you scary idiots.

Geoff So, haven't been hanging around GR much lately - busy with a bunch of music stuff - however I like seeing the continuing life of this thread. Anyway, if there was any doubt in anybody's mind beforehand, I hope it is now truly settled - Donald Trump was elected president precisely to create the conditions for the possibility of a white nationalist/supremacist uprising and retaking of our government and cultural institutions. After his statements of the past few days, anyone blissfully lingering in hopes of something more benign should be completely disillusioned of their fantasies. The matter is settled - now the question the Left needs to deal with is how to remove this man, his administration and family, from power as quickly as possible, to mitigate further damage. He is no benign fool, no lucky idiot puppet - he is the heart and soul of neo-Nazism and the new white supremacy. The new civil war is already here - the question now is how to mitigate the disaster.

Geoff Also, for real, how can he even go make a speech about anything else at this point? Once you've said "Neo-Nazis are cool with me" how do you go then talk about, like, infrastructure or tax reform? Hasn't he essentially neutered himself, except in the eyes of white supremacists? How does one give a state of the union address after saying publically "I'm a Nazi sympathizer"?

Manny There is the amazing Trump talent for acting as though the latest outrageous pronouncement never actually happened, and if it did it doesn't mean anything. He's done it many times already, and a lot of his followers apparently accept that the normal rules for use of language, common decency etc don't apply to him. But this is raising the bar. Most people are either definitely for Nazis or definitely against them, the space in between has always seemed quite small to me.

message 3904: by Nandakishore (new)

Nandakishore Mridula Look at India. In three years, the Narendra Modi government has succeeded in rolling the mindset of the country back by decades and has effectively polarised the population into "us" vs. "them". Then, they have clearly twisted the narrative so that anyone who is not with us is with them, and they "they" here means anti-national rascals in the pay of either Pakistan (if they are Muslims) or China (if they are leftists). Fascism does not take much time to spread, as the route is all downhill.

It's disgusting. Literal Nazi propaganda. In the 1930s, they said it was 'Kulturbolschewismus', attempting to tie social problems to part of a Jewish conspiracy to control art and culture.

Also, everyone, please watch that documentary. It will be difficult, but it's too important not to ignore.

It's cool. He's a troll pure and simple. So, an insignificant thing. I don't even wish him harm or ill. I want him to lead a long, sad, lonely life, looking at his own disgusting presence in the mirror every morning before he logs onto GR to troll - he'll carry on alone, sexless, disconnected, dumb, beyond pathetic, watching from afar, when he does venture out into the world of real people, people so different from him - people enjoying their lives, happy, with friends and loved ones and significant moments - stuff he'll never experience. I don't believe in a punitive afterlife, so it is a small satisfaction knowing his life carries on as its own hell.

From his perspective Yair is right. The neo-Nazis are much less of a threat to Israel these days as compared to some of the left groups they despise.

And in a bigger picture right-wing nationalists of every country have a common underlying mindset. They all understand each other despite having nothing in common.

For instance Trump and Modi understand each other like Obama and Modi or Trump and Manmohan could never. Netanyahu likewise understands Trump and Modi and all three understand each other.

message 3920: by Alfred (new)

Alfred Haplo David wrote: "The last of the Trump intellectuals (?) has jumped ship "

Not exactly. This is another one of those half ass statements from people who try to have it both ways - by distancing themselves from Trump and his overt racism that taints all who supported him, but at the same time, saying they are "not ready to give up" on the "hazy outlines of Mr. Trump's campaign" on healthcare, infrastructure, foreign policy etc etc as outlined in that last paragraph.

It's like saying "I regret voting for Trump! But I do not regret voting Republican!" Anyone can express regrets after the fact, but the question is whether the person will still vote the same way if the clock is turned back. From that article, I dare say he will. So, to the gentleman who wrote about regrets, I'd say to him, Fuck You. Talk is cheap.

message 3922: by carol. (new)

carol. https://www.google.com/amp/s/mobile.n..."

I concur with your conclusion, Alfred, that the writer is both expressing regret but ultimately not taking any responsibility, saying that he believed in many of the things Trump said, even as he said completely crazy things. You can't have it both ways. I'm glad he is open about his regret, as to the unfortunate extent he acted to minimize it, but honestly, anyone who paid attention to this behavior for more than an hour (the debates, anyone?) could have seen this smirking, belligerent, unapologetic mess coming. People. Do. Not. Change.

@Manny: that sounds like a completely appropriate and normal grouping of stories.

Jibran If stopping the Jihadists entailed shooting them with pig's blood I'm sure every government in the Muslim world would have already done that - because we remain the first and foremost target of jihadist zombies however you may look at it.

Either he is an utterly dumb fool to think this would work, or maybe he believes in the magical power of pig's blood. Either way, it is an insult to intelligence to even engage with such nonsense.

On another note, the phenomenon of radical Islamism is a relatively new beast and didn't exist 100 years ago, unless you're following the same logic by which natives became "terrorists" for seeking independence and fighting for it. This is an insult to those people to mix them up with jihadist nihilists we've at hand today.

message 3929: by Jibran (last edited Aug 18, 2017 06:03AM) (new)

Jibran If Tamil Tigers invented modern suicide bombing, the credit goes to the jihadists for inventing a completely new method of killing that requires no training, no investment, no explosives and no firearms. What name shall we give it and more importantly how the hell do you stop this from happening?

Now every large vehicle in busy tourist sites in every major city is a potential weapon. What fucking ingenuity.

My heart goes out to the victims of the attack. That is a terrible way to die.

I am intrigued by Trump's "pig's blood" solution. Does he believe it works on Orthodox Jews as well? They aren't so keen on pigs either. Maybe he could check with Jared. I see this coming in handy next time the boy wonder flies out to the Middle East to broker peace.

I'm not as hopeful it means much in terms of the WH or the president's attitudes. Seems much more like Kelly goading Trump in lieu of squeezing an actual mea culpa about the shitstorm of this week from the toddler-in-chief.

carol. The most astonishing sentence:

"Mr. Trump had recently grown weary of Mr. Bannon, complaining to other advisers that he believed his chief strategist had been leaking information to reporters and was taking too much credit for the president’s successes."

I guess now we know what happens when you put two narcissists in the same room, although I admit I'm puzzled as to what these 'successes' might be.

David M Important analysis here

http://splinternews.com/charlottesvil...

National Review-style conservatism is deader than Clintonite third way-sim, but that doesn't mean the Republican party is seriously hurting or failing. It just means its future thought leaders will be ever more explicitly white nationalist.

message 3943: by Manny (new)

Manny They have discovered that that's what works, and they are pragmatic.

message 3944: by David (new)

David M The article above doesn't portray it as cynical calculation. Young student Republicans really are genuinely racist.

What else would make someone my age or younger a Republican? Traditional conservative orthodoxies about foreign policy and economics have been pretty well discredited. All that's left is the culture war.

It looks like I finally found something genuine!
Actually it's an old "Sponti-Spruch" from the late 60s: Nimm dir einen Strick und erschieß dich, wo das Wasser am tiefsten ist.

Some more of those:

and on an on....

PS: Thanks :)
