Since it seems as likely as not that in a week DONALD FUCKING TRUMP is going to be declared commander-in-chief of the most powerful army humanity has ever known, I ask the good people of the world, what are you stocking your bomb shelters with? Also, half of America? Fuck you. I'm not one of you and I don't like you - stay away from me and my family you scary idiots.

I think this incident should be viewed in the context of Searle's contributions to the philosophy of language. Perhaps he wanted to show Ms Ong that there are many situations where denotational semantics is inadequate, and only a speech-act framework adequately captures one's intuitive understanding of the linguistic content.

If you disagree, just try to write down a Montagovian analysis, in the style of PTQ, of "Oh boy, that sounds great, honey! Let's go to bed and do that right now!" I predict that you'll soon see how challenging it is.

I come from Southern Maryland - Mennonite territory - an Amish/Mennonite administration would be greatly preferable to these decadent capitalist nihilists.

We could. Or just understand that philosophy has no more to do with the 'real' world than does Chemistry. And Searle is just a disgusting old man.

message 2706: by Nathan "N.R." (new)

Nathan "N.R." Gaddis I mean, the story is a big score for continentalists. Now whenever folks insist on the whole, Heidegger was Nazi line, we can come back with, Yeah and Searle was a sexual predator.

I just saw him on Maher this past Friday as Geoff did, and just read your review, Matt. It confirmed my suspicions about the power of the book--he did a really great job selling it on air. I'm sold--will be reading this one after Derrida and animals.

The Maher bit is on youtube, but the sound is somewhat distorted.
I found this one though:

PS Thanks for the friend request Ian.

Jessaka it is just me, or isn't bill Maher doing to the Muslim's what the Nazis did to the Jews? Demonizing them all? I like his show, but I think he needs a good talking to.

message 2727: by Mike (new)

Mike "On Tyranny" is very worthwhile reading, in my opinion. He speaks about it here:

It is not alarmist nor shrill to use the term "inquisition" to describe the zeal for deportation in this administration *and* strong in at least a quarter of the US White population. Good one, Jibran.

Christy Hammer Jessaka wrote: "it is just me, or isn't bill Maher doing to the Muslim's what the Nazis did to the Jews? Demonizing them all? I like his show, but I think he needs a good talking to."

Bill Maher is anti-settlements but otherwise quite the apologist for US-funded horrors by Israel, and often veers into an anti-Muslim sentiment (e.g., why can't the Palestinians just move into that big, empty desert in other "Arab" lands?) My Muslim students say a terrorist cannot be part of Islam, but Maher often equates Islam with terrorism. (I like him, too, Jessaka! :-))

David M Gentle reminder that the enemy is not 'populism'; the enemy is capitalism.

https://www.theguardian.com/business/...

Populism is seen as irrational and reprehensible. It is neither. It seems entirely rational for the bottom 90% of the US population to question why they are getting only 2% of income gains. It hardly seems strange that workers in Britain should complain at the weakest decade for real wage growth since the Napoleonic wars.

It has also become clear that ultra-low interest rates and quantitative easing are merely sticking-plaster solutions. Populism stems from a sense that the economic system is not working, which it clearly isn’t.

Score one for the fracking ban. Hogan is a good e.g. of reaching across party line to work on sensible issues. Little wonder his approval rating is high, well, lower now, but still higher than his predecessors at this time in office. And yeah, I liked that he made his stand on Trump too.

Like Anthony Weiner's ironic destiny - to be undone by his wiener...
