I was talking about this delightful book with a friend who's trying to improve their German, and as soon as we'd started looking at it I found I found I just couldn't put it down until I'd reread it from start to finish. On a scale where Alice in Wonderland scores 5, it must be at least a 4.6.

Awwww, the ending is even cuter than I remembered :) Now where can I find a copy of the sequel?

Dabei sang ich ein kleines Lied vor mich hin, das ich inzwischen gedichtet hatte, um mir die Zeit zu vertreiben. Es ging so:

Ach wie herrlich, ach wie schön,
ganz allein am Strand zu gehn,
Ich bin die Prinzessin Li Si,
weil ich nicht will, mich finden nie sie!
Hum didel dum,
Schrum!

Ich habe den übrigens ganz allein gedichtet, und es war ziemlich schwer, auf Li Si ein passende Reim zu finden.

So Nepomuk is a half-dragon: his father was a pure-blooded dragon, and his mother was a hippopotamus who lived in a zoo. I can't help wondering about the details of the backstory here. A quick search on 'dragon hippo slash fiction' doesn't find anything.

Rereading this and Le petit prince simultaneously, I'm struck by the fact that they both feature someone successfully carrying out a difficult mechanical repair job in the middle of the trackless desert, aided by a much younger companion.

Is Ende referencing Saint-Exupéry? If so, it's quite a funny Easter egg: the help Jim provides is a whole lot more practical.

Had to reread this. Not only is it very funny, it's full of German grammar! I somehow missed that first time round, only noticed the words.

Well, that's the sexiest recitation of the seven times table I've ever read. At least in a children's book.

Chapter 20. In which a steam-engine is sexually harassed by a racist dragon.

Nun trat ein kleiner dicker Gelehrter mit abgeplattetem hinterteil vor und erklärte:

"Ich bin der Kaiserliche Hofprofessor für Zoologie. Was aber die Gattung der Drache anbetrifft, muß ich lieder zugeben, daß die Wissenschaft noch im Dunkeln tappt. Alle Beschreibungen, die ich finden konnte, sind außerordentlich ungenau und widersprechen sich ganz haarsträubend.
