Yikes-"he was with 'the boys' and of course they didn't mind the fact that everyone was sixteen, because men don't care how old their prey is, as long as she's pretty 😭 just casually dropped in a light silly story damn

"Her cheeks looks like Aunt Jemima's--round red blotches of color" and 2 scenes ago she talked about her frizzy hair... that she fixed for her giving her soft dark curls instead of her usual frizz

This book makes me sad. It also reminds me of sex and the city and of course Bridget Jones. The women really are dressing for men, rearranging their lives for men.men who they all agree are subpar and don't deserve them. But at the same time they're so down on themselves. Even the therapist...
Adam is clearly in love with her... the mothers' mistreatment of their daughters in childhood is so effed up. Just sad

But this line oof - he [another guy, an old friend] was with "the boys" and of course they didn't mind the fact that everyone was sixteen, because men don't care how old their prey is, as long as she's pretty.
Woof
Now it's meant to be tongue in cheek, and meant to be the words of a bitter lady down on love, and again she doesn't literally mean 16, they just seem young to her. But wow that's rough

Reading this again (keep losing the damn thing lol) and my perspective have shifted a bit.
The main character is randomly talking about a club they went to where "everyone was 16", and she doesn't mean it literally bc later she talks about meeting a guy there who was "very very young"- 27.

Found it lol
Definitely a book from a different era. They work at a magazine, cell phones exist but they rely more on answering machines. Physical photographs of a girl in his pocket lol
It would be so bizarre to have physical photos today .
Kinda weird then
And yes this is from 2003

Not to say it shouldn't be discussed as a real issue, but it's so overdone in 90s and 2000s books and movies. To the point that their entire personality is about the scale and the diet they're on. I'm afraid that's where we're going here.
