Definitely a step up from Norwegian Wood (until now). The writing feels much more authentic and raw even though the references to depression, isolation and loneliness are more abstract. The characters are more interesting, and the question of why his friends cut ties with him does add a layer of mystery that works really well with this genre and style of writing. Of course it's murakami so he's treading on thin ice.
