I will say that I finally begin to see the deep-rooted influence of this story on a lot of fantasy books that I've read so far. The Owls of Ga'Hoole series (Soren is, and I dare say, a more interesting version of Frodo) and the Dark Rise series with the Stewards being a pretty obvious parallel to the elves, the entire dark shadow chase scene had an uncanny resemblance.
