part two, chapter five:

we finally meet dunya’s fiance. he seems to be a philosophical guy, but those in the room don’t really like him much. especially raskolnikov who’s already mad that his sister is marrying this guy; he hurls some insults at him. raskolnikov angrily kicks everyone out of his room. his childish and irritable behavior might be the start of some suspicions against him regarding the murder

part three, chapter one:

honestly not too many comments on this chapter as while i was reading it i took a couple months break from reading this book. i just recapped it again and its a good start into a new situation in the book. razumikhin is quite a character and we expand more on him in this part. we also really get into raskolnikovs mom and sister and their traits. the building of razumikhin is interesting

part three, chapter one:

nothing crazy happens. we switch perspectives from raskolnikov to pulcheria to razumikhin. it seems like razumikhin has a thing for avdotya maybe… he’s trying to divert zossimovs attention from her perhaps?

part two COMPLETE review:

raskolnikov is sick and bedridden for most of this part. it consists mainly of developing his relationships with some other characters like razumikhin, zossimov, luzhin. we see him fall into a mentally unstable state and start to have weird behavior and thoughts. however at the end of the part we see a sign that he might be stabilizing, especially due to his family finally coming to see him

we finally have the long anticipated return of marmeladov who was mentioned at the very start of the book, but he dies. however, raskolnikov seems to get some of his morality back. his family finally arrives in his home too.

raskolnikov starts acting very strange. the way he conversed with zametov and razumikhin was interesting and weird. i don’t have much more to say about this

part two, chapter four:

this is the most analyzable chapter yet. razumikhin recounts the events of the murder and brings up the painters and what happened with them. i remembered that this was actually seen from raskolnikovs point of view at the end of part one. razumikhin lays out his prediction of the scenario, and referencing the end of part one, he’s actually correct. he might be the one to solve the murder.

part two, chapter three:

some interesting development with razumikhin. we can see that razumikhin is a genuine good friend to raskolnikov, although towards the end of the chapter his yapping about buying a new outfit becomes a little bit irritating to raskolnikov and also me honestly. however that seems to pass quickly as zossimov arrives in the next chapter, where we will probably learn raskolnikov’s health.

it’s interesting how raskolnikov treats razumikhin when he goes to his house, displaying almost bipolar behavior. there’s also an interesting event at the end of the chapter where the landlady is beaten by the police officer, and we are not yet provided a reason for that. nobody shows empathy towards her afterwards, displaying the harsh & maybe sexist state of the society shown in this book

an interesting opening to the next part. we see a visit to the police station, with a random german woman saying some stuff i didn’t understand. there might be some suspicions against raskolnikov coming soon

part one COMPLETE review:

a great intro to the story. we meet many characters, some of whom have not yet demonstrated their importance to the story but may come later. as for now, we see rodya’s dilemma and witness him descend into madness and commit the much anticipated murder (and more). there is a lot of potential for how raskolnikov will be brought to justice from here. he doesn’t seem like a good character.
